The Milan-based Stefano Boeri Architetti will design the rebirth of the former industrial area of Chalupkova, in the city of Bratislava, Slovakia. With its 7.5 acres, it is one of the largest brownfield sites in the Slovak capital. Despite its proximity to the Old Town and the Danube, the area has been in a state of neglect for decades. Now, with the Urban Oasis masterplan, the Milanese architecture firm has won the competition launched at the end of last year by Penta Real Estate, proposing an important urban regeneration intervention.
The starting point is the creation of a large public park, on the sides of which will rise a tower and four medium-density buildings that will house 1,300 apartments. The project will be divided into four phases and will be completed over a period of about ten years.

The project by Stefano Boeri Architetti has been designed to create “a new district of buildings that will use the traditional stone and brick façades and combine them with greenery” around a large public garden.
“The Urban Oasis project brings to a country that is winning the challenge of integration in Europe, an innovative residential district that develops around a large garden. high biodiversity,” said architect Stefano Boeri. “Bratislava will thus take a step forward towards the model of an archipelago metropolis: a city where neighborhoods are involved in clean energy production, with the variety of functions and inhabitants typical of European cities, with the living nature of the plants at their center and on the facades of the buildings.”

We have worked on how to optimize direct natural light, and at the same time protect the area from wind and noise pollution, on how to enhance the accessibility and usability of the park, and on how to transform it into an element of regulation of the microclimate, humidity and the urban heat island effect,” said Pietro Chiodi, partner of Stefano Boeri Architetti.

The Urban Oasis will revitalize the area through a system of residential spaces, green areas, and public functions with the aim of defining a new core for the city. Specifically, the master plan is developed on a triangular plot of 350,000 square-feet and includes five buildings – one tower and four medium-density buildings – developed around a new large central public park, open to all: a series of pathways, open spaces, and common areas cross the park, enriching the area with new urban amenities accessible to all citizens, and that will enhance the permeability of the neighborhood.
