Tallinn, Estonia, has just been named the world’s best destination for a day trip, followed by Florence, Italy. The newly released September 2026 study by Duel.com reveals the top 10 sightseeing stops where travelers can tour the most famous landmarks within just 24 hours.
- Tallinn is the world’s best city for a quick getaway, with 20 world-famous landmarks just steps apart inside its medieval Old Town.
- Rome beats Paris for a day trip, with its airport only 12 km from the center and 40 iconic sights to tour, including the Colosseum.
- Even a few hours of layover stop is worth it in Prague, which offers 20+ historic monuments and a 75/100 safety rating for stress-free sightseeing.
The research examined 250+ cities across the world to find the best destinations for a single day of travel. The report tracked the number of famous sights within 2 km of each city center, how close those sights are to each other, and how far the nearest major airport is from the city core. Safety ratings and cost of living were also considered. Cities were then ranked by combining all five factors, revealing where travelers get the most out of a short stop.
Here’s a look at the top 10 best cities for a day trip:

- Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn is the world’s best city for a 24-hour stopover. The airport is just 5 km from the city center, so travelers can be inside the medieval Old Town within minutes of landing. From there, 20 globally known sights are within walking distance of each other, including the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Gothic Town Hall square. The city also scores 78.5 out of 100 for safety, one of the strongest ratings in all of Europe, and daily costs are well below most Western capitals.
- Florence, Italy
Florence comes in second, built almost entirely around a walkable historic center where the airport is barely 5 km out. The city has 25 world-famous landmarks within 2 km of its core led by Brunelleschi’s Dome and Ponte Vecchio. On top of that, those sights are spread across a tight area, so visitors can cover serious ground without long transit between stops. With a cost index of 72.5, Florence is more expensive than Tallinn but stays well below Paris or New York.
- Rome, Italy
Rome has more globally recognized sights near its center than any other city. A total of 40 famous attractions sit within 2 km of the city center here, including the Colosseum and the Pantheon. The airport is about 12.5 km out, but once in the town, there is more within walking distance than almost anywhere else on earth. Plus, despite its touristy reputation, Rome is actually almost twice as cheap as New York.
- Vienna, Austria
Vienna ranks fourth, with one of the highest safety ratings of 70.4 out of 100. The Austrian capital has 27 world-famous landmarks within 2 km of the center, with St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Hofburg Palace being the must-sees. The airport sits about 18 km out, which is the furthest of the top four, but the city offsets that with strong public transport links. At a cost index of 75.1, Vienna is also way cheaper than many other capitals, including London.
- Saint Petersburg, Russia
Saint Petersburg rounds out the top five, offering 29 world-famous landmarks near its city center, including the State Hermitage Museum and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. The city is much more affordable than other European alternatives as well, with a living cost index of just 41.2. Its airport is also about 15.6 km away, still close enough to go back and forth during a layover. With a safety score of 62.6, Petersburg is reasonably safe, though travelers should confirm visa requirements before visiting.
“Short trips and day visits have become quite a common way to travel in Europe, and cheap flights are the main reason,” a Duel.com spokesperson commented. Budget carriers have made it possible to fly between major European cities for under €30 if you book at the right time. So, instead of planning months in advance, a lot of Europeans now set price alerts on platforms like Google Flights and book whenever a deal shows up. And if a discount pops up for one of these cities, you can book with confidence knowing how cool the sightseeing there can be, even in a single day.”
